First of all, I must explain why this article is being published in english when the rest of the blog is in portuguese. It so happens that I went to New York last christmas and while admiring the squared city streets and trying to absorb the spirit of the Big Apple, despite the so very painful cold for us: southern europeans, I tried to avoid the extreme temperatures by entering in a restaurant for lunch near the Rockafeller center, experience of witch I would like to tell you. Also, I am writing in english and publishing in my blog because I want the most people to read this sort of review that I tried to send to the worldwide famous wine magazine, the Wine Spectator, but in order to do so I would have to buy a year subscription just to send them an e-mail... And based on the content of that e-mail, I shore wouldn't like to buy the magazine, much less for a year!
As I said before, I went to New York last christmas, and the extreme could pushed me towards the closest restaurant: Alfredo of Rome. I saw the Wine Spectator award in the hall and I remember thinking: This should be interesting... Unfortunately, as I crossed the hall, all the enthusiasm started to fade away when the waiter chose us a table in the restaurants's lobby as opposed to the main room... I suppose it was because of my ski-like jacket, even though the main room was almost empty.
For starters came pureed olives to go with the disappointing bread: the olives were too acidic and far worst than the ones I buy already packed here in portugal. I asked for Pappardelle Alla Aragosta, the noddles were nice, the sauce was o.k. and the lobster was over-cooked witch left some tasteless rubber-like slices of the referred crustacean. I was hoping to find some comfort in the wine! It was asked for one merlot and one pino grigio, both americans (since i was in america I might as well try their wine!). I liked the Pino Grigio better, the oak was very deep in the Merlot and I prefer wines not so rounded, still, this are californian wines, and they're much softer than the ones I prefer with a lot more body and acidity. The temperatures were higher than expected and the prices were exaggerated. Now what surprised me the most was the terrible service, specially concerning the wines, like I said the temperatures were wrong (and since I wasn't worthy of the main room I wouldn't dare to ask the waiter to cool down the wine!) and when I was ready to pour the wine I notice that the glass had water left from the washing machine... I called the waiter for replacing the glass, and he said, while dripping the water to the floor, "Don't worry this is just water from the washing machine" and gave me back the same glass still wet(!). This is not the service I expect from a restaurant awarded by the Wine Spectator: the total lack of regard for the almost sacred ritual of enjoying a wine: since the right (clean and dry) glass, temperatures, bottle instead of a jar, even the wine menu was very poor in information... If you value eating and drinking well you won't choose this restaurant, and, as I have, you will start to question the meaning of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence.
